CaCl2 electrolysis

Electrolysis of molten CaCl2 which is used for obtaining Ca metal or, if mixed with other metal oxides such as TiO2, obtain other metals. This experiment involves a welder and a 40 amps rectifier and the arcing at the beginning is to heat up the CaCl2 pellets to melt and when molten, the electrodes are dipped into the liquid. The resistance of the liquid salt keeps it at temperature of about 750-800oC. The anode is left and the cathode right. Some small orange sparks are burning Ca metal which is released.
