thanks for the comments, my conclusion: chlorine gas evolved in the test tube… but its yellowish green is light, almost unnoticeable… firstly hydrogen gas will form at the cathode as sodium is too reactive to be extracted there. its electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride not molten one anyway… chlorine gas will be formed at the anode as i have put in plenty of salt in the water
